How collaborative leadership can pull us forward in a divided world.
When the world pulls us apart, we lead by pulling together!
A practical, plainspoken toolkit for public leaders, community members and the public! Grounded in real work, not theory!
I need to start with an uncomfortable confession.
As someone the American Library Association once noted "wrote the book on this stuff," I have to acknowledge that the evidence makes it painfully clear: we haven't been doing collaborative leadership well!
The extreme polarization we're all experiencing is all the proof we need.
For decades, I've been writing and teaching about collaborative leadership as a strategy for bringing people together and an antidote to division. My book Collaborative Leadership became a national bestseller, used in graduate courses and professional trainings worldwide. I've coached thousands of public, nonprofit, community and education leaders.
But here's what I've come to understand: too many of our collaborations have inadvertently become "inside jobs" - comfortable partnerships with people who think like us, leaving out voices that could have strengthened our work and helped us achieve our missions more effectively.
We've been collaborating within our comfort zones while the world pulled further apart around us.
That's why I've written Leadership Re-Imagined: Reimagining Collaboration When the World is Pulling Us Apart - not as another set of answers, but as a reflection Toolkit for mission-driven leaders who recognize we need to lead differently.
There are stakeholders out there who share your mission ... but haven't been part of your collaborative work.
Over the next two weeks, I'm sharing a free prepublication edition with leaders like you - people who aren't afraid to honestly examine their own approaches to leadership.
I'm not looking for praise. I'm looking for your thoughtful critique. Your questions, insights and suggestions; what's missing that could make this publication stronger and more useful?
Would you be willing to take a look and share your thoughts?
With respect and support, Hank.
